  2. We were introduced to Bolivian Mountain Guides by a friend who assured us we would be fine. Eduardo met us on day 2 in La Paz and took us to an equipment place to be fitted for the gear for our big climb to Acotango. That was exciting and we knew we were about to embark on a big adventure.

We are not climbers but wanted to do these physical challenges and tackled 2 climbs, the first of Pico Austria(5350m) on Day 4. Although we were fit, it was a very hard struggle and it was obvious we did not allow enough acclimatisation. Our guide for the Pico Austria day, Luis, was very patient and encouraging. At the time of reaching the summit we could hardly even get excited due to exhaustion.

On day 8 we were taken to Sajama National Park by Eduardo for the Acotango climb (6052m). We stayed in small traditional houses called Lakauta. It was great that one of our party was fluent in Spanish and English as we had a running commentary of the trip and sights. Eduardo knows the mountain intimately and after leaving after breakfast at 4am we started the climb at 5.30am. Eduardo gave us great confidence and when we finally reached the glacier ice we fitted crampons and proceeded to the steeper slopes. It was super hard but again the patience and encouragement of Eduardo and his focus on safety was to the fore and with ropes and crampons we reached the summit and its incredible vistas of the altoplano and volcanoes Sajama and Parinacota! The skies were clear as anticipated by Eduardo and because of the very early start. Clouds tend to close in after midday and we were at the summit at 10am.

We can’t recommend Eduardo and Bolivian Mountain Guides enough for professionalism and their encouragement for us to achieve our personal goals.
